Get back to the Silver Screen

Following a recent flick through the September issue of British Vogue, made me wonder whether it was just me but are celebrities taking over the fashion industry? Within literally pages of the issue, a clump of celebrity endorsements bore their beautiful but ugly money - spinning heads to manipulate us to buy the latest products from the must have brands. For these are the ladies we aspire to, not the nymph like creatures of china doll appearance that appear, mirage like on the runways.

Although not necessarily a bad thing that celebrities are used to sell products, as they are in many ways far more accessible for us to relate to. They have had bad relationships, bad habits and often a murky past that takes a while to reveal it self. We feel we know them too. We know they like skinny Latte Frappechinos, wear red Wayfarers, use Chanel lipstick and the contents of their fridge, so why shouldn't they be flogging the latest 'It' bag to us either?

However, it seems to me that some things should be left sacred. There was a time when fashion magazines only ever featured fashion models on their covers, now this has become somewhat of a rarity, for the number of celebs overcoming difficult breakups and needing to reinvent themselves on the covers of our glossy fashion bibles has become the norm. As much as I like to know whats happening in the lives of my favourite actresses and the ongoings in the celebrity bubble, I want my fashion magazines to be about fashion and I want the fashion advertisements, that I fawn over to feature real fashion models; a mystical beautiful rare specie, not someone who I know everything about.

So, back to my flick in Vogue, there was Scarlett Johansson featuring in a 4 page Louis Vuitton extravaganza, Sienna luxurious for Tods and a sultry Angelina Jolie in a monotone St. John campaign. Now, I can just about tolerate the first two - Scarlett, a Marc Jacob's muse definitely possess' that glamorous, 1940's exceedingly seductive look, Sienna, a clothes horse and a in my opinion just has a lovely, naturally expressive face but the latter? Jolie or Mama Angelina, should she be known, just looks ridiculous. The churned out "I'm so hotttt, I'm boilin'" bee stung lips and semi closed eyes, in a desperate bid to look "fashion - y" and sexy at the same time, just has me reeling. Although probably alot will disagree, Angelina in my opinion has never been particularly fashionable. Tolerable and well dressed, yes but the face of a luxury fashion brand? No. Jolie, you have been exhausted, put the pout away.

As much as I like and admire the work of some of these ladies, the use of them in the fashion industry is irksome, tedious and often shameless, for the Suits behind it all, just know Keira Knightley will shift even more bottles of Coco Mademoiselle, from the shelves.

Note
My a/w accessorising series is not over yet and this post also has a similiar sequel.
